Gathering prayer:

Loving God, we thank you for John the Baptist whose voice spoke truth; for the voice at Jesus' baptism which spoke of delight; and for Jesus himself whose voice calls us to follow him to new beginnings. Amen

Welcome:

Today we look at Jesus baptism, and how this was a new beginning and a transformation.

Gospel:

This Sunday's reading is Mark 1 4-11 either read it yourself from your own Bible or use www.biblegateway.com .

Activity for now:

Half fill a beaker with water, add a squirt of washing up liquid. What can you see in the beaker? Now using a straw blow into the mixture. What changes has the air made to the mixture? Remember everything changed for Jesus when he was baptized.

Extra Activity:

Look these people up on the internet and find out a little about who they are and what they do... Greta Thunberg, Malala Yousafzai, David Attenborough, Jack Monroe. Do you think Jesus would have been an activist like them? If so, in what way? Plan some ways in which you can be involved in initiatives for positive change e.g. litter picking, contributing to a food bank, reducing plastic waste.

Activity for this week:

Notice someone campaigning for change either at home, in the community, or in the world. Support them with prayer and by getting involved.

Prayer for today:
May the God of new beginnings give you courage to face each new challenge, joy in each new day and friends to journey with you through this new week. Amen
